Active Directory Schema Updates for SCCM 2007

Posted on 12:41 PM by Unknown
Beware!

If you are planning to update your AD schema for SCCM 2007 using ldifde and the supplied LDIF file ConfigMgr_ad_schema.ldf file, located in the \SMSSETUP\BIN\I386 directory of the Configuration Manager 2007 installation files.

Make sure you read to the bottom of the info at URL:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb632388.aspx

And edit the LDIF file as directed, otherwise the update will fail with an error and you will need to rerun a partial LDIF. Personally I would also use an editor capable of displaying line numbers as the error output helpfully gives you the line in the LDIF where the error occoured.

If you already have the schema extensions for for SMS 2003 in AD then the update will also fail at the first instance of the section beginning:

# ----------------------------------------------------------------------
# SMS Assignment Site Code Attribute
# This section adds the SMS 2003 compatible attribute for SMS Sites
# This attribute will fail to be added if the AD schema has already been
# extended for SMS 2003.
# ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Why on earth Microsoft cannot provide an up-to-date LDIF file for SCCM 2007 is beyond me: they could even provide one for AD schemas that have already been updated for SMS 2003.

I always take the precaution of checking that each attribute has been added to the Schema master using the AD Schema MMC plugin. This at least give you a small amount of comfort when you start the task of resolving the critical errors from Components in the SCCM Site Status - which you will be doing!

High Availability in SQL Server 2005

Posted on 11:11 AM by Unknown
Had a technical architecture document recently from an external supplier proposing a mirrored SQL Server 2005 setup with the Principal as a MSCS. Noticed in the Technet docs that:

"... you may consider using database mirroring as a method for creating a hot standby for a cluster instance database. If you do, be forewarned that because a cluster failover is longer than the timeout value on database mirroring, a High Availability mode mirroring session will react to a cluster failover as a failure of the principal server. It would then put the cluster node into a mirroring state."

Sooooo... this makes the use of a cluster Principal kind of redundant as if it fails over then SQL will move over to the Mirror server. For further info see the Mirroring FAQ.

more on MGE NMC 66074

Posted on 12:34 AM by Unknown
The saga continues. First it was suggested that I download the cards SSL root certificate and install this in my browser. However, using the URL supplied returned an HTTP 404. Next, I'm told that this will be resolved by upgrading the card's firmware to the latest GE version. This I do using the documented and supplied Download command line tool over a direct serial connection, and guess what? Yes, I still get the same HTTP 404!

I'm now told that I must upgrade the firmware using the supplied Mupgrade GUI tool. I report that unfortunately this tool does not work as it will not connect to the card even if I explicitly use the IP address to Add it in. (by default it appears to use TFTP to search for cards on the network) -in any case all it does is undertake the same upgrade with the same supplied software. Silence. I guess the French software engineer must be on holiday for August. Meanwhile I've asked for a customer site that has this card working in a similar environment. Silence.

MGE Network Shutdown Module

Posted on 2:31 AM by Unknown
Recently when attempting to get the APC/MGE NSM v3 client to work against an NMC66074 Transverse card we found that you need to have port 5000 TCP open in your firewall settings for the NMC in order for communication to work. This is not documented and we had to WireShark the client end to discover this.

Meanwile the SSL implentation on the NMC 66074 still has bugs that render it all but unusable so HTTPS is not an option as documented.

ARPs and NIC Teaming

Posted on 2:35 PM by Unknown
Background:
A NIC Team is known by a single MAC address to clients in the network. This MAC address is only used as the source MAC address by the Primary adapter in the Team. Secondary adapters in the team use their own MAC address as the source address. This MUST be done by NIC Teaming to be compliant with IEEE standards.

For TLB, when a client ARP's for the Team's MAC address using the Team's IP address, the Team will respond with the Team's MAC address (used by the Primary adapter). So, all traffic is received by the Primary adapter. Traffic transmitted out of the Primary adapter has a source address of the Team. Traffic transmitted out of the Secondary adapters use their own MAC address (not the same as the Team MAC address). Since clients with a proper TCP/IP stack implementation should ONLY update their ARP table based on data received in ARP request or replies, receiving data with a different source MAC from a secondary adapter will not affect clients with a complient TCP/IP stack.

Some implementations of the TCP/IP stack in clients are picky in that they require the source MAC address to match the MAC address in the ARP cache. There's no good reason for this. In fact, we've found a few of our own products that had this incorrect implementation and we had to fix it.
